Questions

How does this find my nearest US airport?

We take your GPS location (or ZIP via zippopotam.us), then compute the great-circle distance in miles to every one of the 634 US commercial airports with scheduled service, ranking them closest first. The calculation runs in your browser on a static JSON file — no server round-trip.

What's the nearest airport to New York City?

LaGuardia (LGA) is the closest major airport to Manhattan, at about 8 miles east-northeast. John F. Kennedy (JFK) is 15 miles southeast, and Newark Liberty (EWR) is 15 miles west. Westchester County (HPN) serves the northern suburbs.

What's the nearest airport to Los Angeles?

Los Angeles International (LAX) is the primary airport for the LA Basin, 17 miles southwest of downtown. Burbank (BUR) is closer to Hollywood at 12 miles. Long Beach (LGB), Ontario (ONT), and John Wayne (SNA) serve the surrounding region.

What's the nearest airport to Chicago?

O'Hare International (ORD) is 17 miles northwest of the Loop; Midway (MDW) is the closer airport at 10 miles southwest, dominated by Southwest Airlines. Both have extensive domestic networks and good CTA transit links.

I'm in a rural state — what if the nearest airport is far?

Large parts of Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and the Dakotas are served by small airports via Essential Air Service (EAS), a federal program subsidizing rural routes. This tool will still find the closest — just expect longer drives to reach a major hub.

Can I use this without sharing my GPS location?

Yes. Type any US ZIP code into the fallback field and we'll geocode it via zippopotam.us (a free public service). You can also tap any of the popular-city cards below.

Why isn't the closest airport always the cheapest?

Ultra-low-cost carriers (Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant) concentrate at a handful of airports. If you're willing to drive an hour further, you'll often find fares at half the price. A secondary airport like Midway, Hollywood Burbank, or Fort Lauderdale can be cheaper than its larger neighbour.

Does the drive distance account for roads?

No — we show straight-line (great-circle) distance in miles, which is simpler and accurate for air-travel planning. Actual driving distance will be 20–40% longer depending on terrain and road network. Use the driving estimate only as a rough guide.
