Los Angeles International (LAX)

Los Angeles International (LAX) is the second busiest US airport by passenger numbers and the country's primary trans-Pacific gateway. It sits about 18 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles on a coastal strip that backs directly onto the Pacific. LAX is unusual for a major hub in that no single airline dominates: American, Delta and United each run sizeable operations, with Alaska and Southwest also strong on West Coast routes. The horseshoe-shaped Central Terminal Area packs nine terminals plus the Tom Bradley International Terminal into a tight footprint. One quick factoid: LAX's Theme Building, the white space-age structure in the centre of the horseshoe, has been a Los Angeles landmark since 1961.

5 things you didn't know about Los Angeles International

Verified by the CompareFlights team
  1. 1The 'Theme Building' (1961) at the airport's center is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument — designed during the Space Age and intended to evoke a flying saucer landing on parabolic legs.
  2. 2LAX's three-letter code began as 'LA' in the 1920s; the X was appended in the 1930s when the FAA standardized all airport codes to three letters. The X is silent — locals just say 'L-A-X'.
  3. 3The airport spans 3,500 acres but has no rail link to LA Metro — the Automated People Mover (APM) connecting LAX to the K Line opens in late 2026, ending decades of regional debate.
  4. 4LAX is the only US airport with a dedicated celebrity terminal — 'The Private Suite' (Terminal 1.5) — where tickets cost $4,500 per arrival or departure for an entirely separate path through customs and a private TSA checkpoint.
  5. 5Approach to runway 24R passes 60 feet over the In-N-Out Burger on Sepulveda Boulevard — the unofficial 'world's best LAX-watching spot' has its own Yelp category.

Frequently asked about LAX

Which terminal does American use at LAX?

American Airlines mainline domestic flights operate primarily from Terminal 4, with overflow and partner operations in Terminal 5. International long-haul AA flights vary — some depart from Terminal 4, others use Tom Bradley International. Confirm your terminal on your boarding pass; airside connectors link 4, 5 and TBIT for through-passengers.

How early should I arrive at LAX for an international flight?

Three hours before departure is the standard recommendation, particularly for Tom Bradley International. Curbside drop-off can back up severely on the upper roadway during evening departure banks. If you have checked baggage and a long-haul international ticket, do not cut it under two hours.

Can I get a rideshare directly outside my terminal at LAX?

No. Since 2019 all rideshare and taxi pickups happen at LAX-it, a dedicated lot east of Terminal 1. A free shuttle bus runs from each terminal's lower (arrivals) curb to LAX-it every 3-5 minutes. The transfer typically adds 10-15 minutes to your journey.

What's the cheapest way from LAX to downtown LA?

The cheapest reliable option is the Metro K Line / C Line via the Automated People Mover and LAX/Metro Transit Center, totalling about $1.75. Journey time is roughly an hour. The FlyAway bus to Union Station is faster (about 35-45 minutes off-peak) and costs about $10.

Are there hotels connected to LAX terminals?

There is no hotel inside the Central Terminal Area. A cluster of brand hotels sits along Century Boulevard immediately east of LAX with free shuttles. The closest walkable property is the H Hotel, though most travellers use shuttles given LAX's roadway layout.
